The Globe Announce Casting For 2015 Season

Our friends at Shakespeare’s Globe have whetted appetites for their 2015 season with the announcement of some principal casting. With shows including ‘Richard II’, ‘As You Like It’ and a rare production of ‘King John’ that will go on a mini-tour before arriving at The Globe, 2015 promises to be a great one at the Bankside venue. Shakespeare’s Globe is delighted to announce that Charles Edwards will be taking the lead in Simon Godwin’s Richard II, opening at the Globe 11 July. Jo Stone-Fewings will take the title role with Alex Waldmann playing The Bastard in a co-production with Royal & Derngate of James Dacre’s King John. Johnny Flynn will be composing for period instruments for the first time in Blanche McIntyre’s As You Like It, opening 15 May

Winner of the 2014 Clarence Derwent Award for his performance in Strange Interlude(National Theatre), Charles Edwards most recently starred in Blithe Spirit (West End, North American tour) opposite Angela Lansbury. He was nominated for an Evening Standard Award for Best Actor for his performance at the Globe as Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing (2011), and received another nomination in 2012 for his performance in This House (National Theatre). Television credits include Arthur & George (ITV), Downton Abbey(ITV), A Young Doctor’s Notebook (Sky) and Ripper Street (BBC). Film credits includePhilomena, Batman Begins and Mansfield Park.

Jo Stone-Fewings will play King John and most recently appeared in 3 Winters (National Theatre) and Jamie Lloyd’s Macbeth (Trafalgar Studios). Jo was made an Associate Artist for the RSC in 2012, appearing in several productions including The Winter’s Tale, Twelfth Night and The Taming of the Shrew. Following his vibrant performance as King John in the RSC’s 2012 production, Alex Waldmann will be taking on the role of The Bastard for the Globe stage. Alex first appeared at the Globe in The Duchess of Malfi and other stage credits include Sebastian in Michael Grandage’s Twelfth Night with Derek Jacobi and Laertes in the same company’s Hamlet, starring Jude Law.  

Tanya Moodie will play Constance having most recently appeared in The House That Will Not Stand (Tricycle Theatre), her stage credits include playing opposite Lenny Henry inFences (Bath Theatre Royal, West End) to critical acclaim. Barbara Marten will play Eleanor of Aquitaine having recently taken the role of Gertrude opposite Maxine Peake inHamlet (Manchester Royal Exchange). Her television credits include Casualty (BBC)andWhitechapel (ITV). Having most recently played the title role in the Globe’s touring production of King Lear, Joseph Marcell will play Cardinal Pandulph. His many stage and television credits include the title role in Peer Gynt (National Theatre), Crates and Barrels(RSC), and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (NBC).

Johnny Flynn played Viola in the Globe’s smash hit 2012 production of Twelfth Night with Mark Rylance and Stephen Fry, and Lady Anne in Richard III, both productions enjoying hugely successful runs in the West End and on Broadway. Johnny also played opposite Mark Rylance in Jerusalem (Royal Court, West End, Broadway), receiving an Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actor. Television credits include Scrotal Recall (Channel 4) and Detectorists (BBC Four). Johnny is also a successful recording artist, whose albums include Country Mile andA Film Score of a Bag of Hammers.

The full cast for King John comprises Laurence Belcher, Simon Coates, Aruhan Galieva, Joseph Marcell, Barbara Marten, Mark Meadows, Tanya Moodie, Ciaran Owens, Daniel Rabin, Jo Stone-Fewings, Giles Terera and Alex Waldmann.

Building for the new season in Belfast

With Adam Keefe's testimonial and their HospICE Hockey fundraising game in the rear-view mirror, it's time for Belfast Giants to set their sights on the season ahead and their first announcement, late last week, was a belter as they confirmed Keefe would return for another season as head coach. In addition to Keefe's return the first player signing of the new season has been announced, with the return of fan-favourite forward Scott Conway. The team's top scorer last season, is beloved by Giants fans and the sort of character this league needs more of. His ability to wind up the opposition means opposing fans love to hate him and he does a brilliant job of finding motivation for his teammates and weak spots in the opposing team's armour. Conway may have been the first returnee to be announced, but the news is coming thick and fast now, with Scott's linemates David Goodwin and JJ Piccinich back for more and Ben Lake committing to his sixth season at the SSE Arena....
